After 23 years of working for someone else, I began to appreciate the benefits of being my own boss. So after learning the pest control business while working at Orkin for two years, I decided to start my own company—JH Pestaway.

I became an entrepreneur because I wanted more out of life and the ability to take control of my destiny. Owning a business allows me the financial freedom to take care of my family and leave behind a legacy to my children.

The biggest obstacle that I had to overcome was myself. Stepping out of your comfort zone to venture into the business world can be scary, so I am glad I decided to take the Community Business Academy, which was the best decision that I’ve made.

Many people aspire to be business owners, but don’t know where to start. The CBA allowed me to analyze my business plan and avoid costly mistakes that would have occurred due to a lack of business knowledge. This combined with the support of my classmates contributed to the high morale of the entire class and resulted in a great learning environment.

Now I feel confident enough to work on my business full-time, have a fully-functioning website, and even hired an employee. My hope is that by the time my 4-year-old boys are 18, JH Pestaway will grow to the point that they will be financially stable.
